Asylum Challenge #195: The Call.

Carla musters up the guts to call her mom.

----------------------------

Carla has her heart in her stomach and her stomach in her throat. She dials her mother's number, still knowing it off by heart.

It rings once, twice and a third time before it's picked up.

"Hello?"

"Mother...."

"Carla?! Is that you?!" Her mother almost faints right there with the phone in hand.

"Yes mom, it's me."

"I.....oh my god dear."

"I know you didn't expect to hear from me but we need to talk."

Her mother starts crying.

"Don't cry mother, at least not yet."

"I don't understand. Why did you want to call me? What's wrong?"

"I um, I'm having a baby."

"You......."The phone goes silent, "you're having a baby?"

"Yes, with Joey. I had kept it from you in my last letter but I knew I wanted to start things off new with you, a new found relationship between you and I and that meant no secrets. I didn't want you to find out later on."

"I appreciate you doing that for me dear, this really show you're starting to trust me again."

"I trust you completely because I need you to do me a favour but only if you want to."

"Oh what is it?" She asks, nervously.

"I want you to take our child, in your custody until Joey and I can get out. The Warden has set a goal of 3 years, if not the child will be stuck in your custody."

"Wow...."

There was a long pause.

"So what do you say mom? Would you like the care for your grandchild?"

Her mother is crying again, heavily into the phone.

Carla then begins to cry too.

"Yes, I'll do it. I want to prove myself to you, to Joey and especially to my first grandchild."

"Oh mother, I'm so happy to hear that!"

"If I could I'd hug you right now."

"You can when I see you again." She said, sniffling.

"Deal."
